Do I already need a team of students when I apply?
Advisors are welcome to apply with a compiled team but it is not required. SAS can help recruit additional students or a whole team if preferable.
Do advisors need to be from SAS?
Each team must have an SAS advisor but co-advised teams can have one faculty member from a different school.
Can we have students from outside of SAS?
Yes, students from other schools are permitted to join IRT teams, but a majority of students must be from SAS. Please consult the director if you have concerns about representing SAS on your proposed team.
Are any additional funds available for project-related expenses?
There may be modest additional funds available to support project-related expenses, but we hope that the research funds that accompany your advising role will cover the majority of project-related costs. Decisions about additional funding are made by an SAS Dean.
Do students get a letter grade?
Yes, students receive letter grades for each semester in the IRT program. The IRT course is 1.5 credits and will factor into their GPA. Please articulate grading standards and project expectations with students at the outset of the semester. The director is happy to discuss final grades and student progress with advisors.
What if I have a student who does not complete necessary work?
It is unusual, but we have had situations where students had to leave the team due to unforeseen circumstances. Students have also received lower grades when they did not complete necessary work on a case by case basis. The director is available to discuss final grades with advisors if necessary.
Can students work on the projects remotely for a semester?
IRT is designed to be an engaging experiential learning opportunity and thus we strongly prefer that students are available to meet in person.
