Who is eligible to join IRT?
Undergraduate students, specifically SAS but not limited to, are encouraged to apply to join an IRT team if they are in good academic standing with a 3.0 GPA. If you do not meet the minimum GPA but think you are a good fit for a project, please contact the IRT director to discuss.
Can I propose my own research idea?
Students are eligible to submit their own research proposals provided they have an SAS faculty member to support the team as principal advisor.
Can I still participate in IRT without registering for academic credit?
IRT students are required to register for academic credit every semester they participate in IRT. If you have reached your maximum credit load, please reach out to the IRT director to discuss.
Can I participate while studying abroad?
IRT is designed to be a collaborative, experiential learning opportunity and thus we expect students to be in residence and available for onsite meetings and research presentations throughout the project.
When and how do I receive my financial award for IRT?
Financial awards are processed at the end of the semester after your advisor has determined that you have completed all assigned work successfully and completely. These awards get processed through student accounting and are applied to your accounts. If you have a balance on a term bill these funds can offset the costs, otherwise, you can request a refund check to access these funds.
Does IRT impact my GPA?
IRT is a 1.5 credit research course and has a letter grade that is factored into your GPA.
How is my letter grade calculated?
Your project advisors discuss your final grade with the program director at the end of each term. Grades are dependent upon your full participation in the research project, collaborating with your team, attending meetings, completing any individual tasks, participating in the research presentations and completing three small reflection assignments for the program director.
