The Interdisciplinary Research Team Fellowship program highly encourages faculty-led proposals for team-based projects. IRT can support teams of 2-5 students to work with either one or two SAS faculty advisors on semester or year-long projects
The goal of the program is to expose students to interdisciplinary study and to give them the opportunity to work collaboratively with students and faculty who may be outside of their chosen discipline on an original research question. In the spirit of expanding traditional notions of undergraduate research, we highly encourage projects that propose a “deliverable” beyond a traditional research paper. For example, projects might involve development of a proposal, prototype, a communications campaign, a set of resources for a particular group, an exhibit, a (virtual or actual) tour, a public education plan, an app, etc. Teams must be multidisciplinary but at least half of any team should be SAS students and supervising faculty must be from SAS.
Faculty advisors are encouraged to submit a proposal that clearly outlines their intended research project and deliverable, describes student responsibilities throughout the duration of the project, and indicates what different majors and skill sets they would like on their teams. Advisors are welcome to apply with students pre-selected or work with the program director to recruit additional students for their team.

- Faculty should commit to regular meetings with their teams. SAS OUE can help if a specific scheduling request is necessary.
- Each advisor should complete a syllabus that outlines student expectations for their work each semester.
- Advisors should help prepare students for fall and spring research presentations and attend each event.
- Each advisor will determine letter grades at the conclusion of the semester and report those to the Program Director.
- Projects can be co-advised with one faculty member outside of SAS.
- Advisors receive $2,500 in support of their project.
- Co-advisors each receive $2,000 in support of their project for teams with two advisors.
- Small sums of additional funds may be available up to the discretion of the Dean.
